- Um, well, tokki is actually Korean for rabbit.
Kaitlin is half-Korean.
- Yes.
- And, I mean, the story behind it, we just kind of came up with a bunch of ideas, essentially.
- Yeah.
We were just coming up with the whatevers, the whatevers, and I came up with The Tokkis-- - [Jillian] And I think at some point, you said rabbit, as well, something rabbit.
And I said what about, or you said moon something, I don't remember what it was, but we eventually combined words.
- Yeah, and I think we wanted something spacelike too.
- Yeah.
- And then there's a folk story about if you look at the craters of the moon, it looks like a rabbit and so in Korean folklore, there's the story of rabbits with a mortar and pestle on the moon and it's supposed to bring prosperity, good luck, stuff like that, so.
- We wanted a name that everyone would mispronounce.
- Yes.
(band members laughing) - That too.
- Exactly.
- So once again, we are Moon Tokki.
Tokki.
- T-O-K-K-I.
- T-O-K-K-I.
- Hey, if you can Google it, it's good.
- Yeah.
- Yes.
- Which, so, considering our environment, considering where we are, what is your favorite record in your collection?
- Ooh, that is a tough one.
Do you have one already off the top of your head?
- Yeah.
- What is it?
- Yeah, it's Muse's "Origin of Symmetry."
- That's a good one.
- I'm a huge Muse fan and that is peak Muse.
(people laughing) - Y'all have favorites?
- Uh, it's tricky.
Probably one of The Beatles or I really like our playing our "Best of the Ronettes."
But yeah, I can't, I can't pick.
- Yeah.
- You need to be quizzed.
- Yeah.
(Jillian laughs) - Yeah, well, I guess mine's just "Abbey Road."
I think with the back medley and the B parts, you can't really go wrong with that.
- There's a reason the hits are the hits, right?
- I'll say Bowie's "Blackstar" album is my favorite.
For obvious reasons, I mean.
Bowie's the best, our next song is actually about David Bowie, so.
- So he was the muse?
- David Bowie absolutely was the muse, yeah.
(all chuckling) - Full circle, yeah.
- Yeah.
- [Jillian] All right.
Ready for the next one?
- "Moon Dust," okay?
- Mm-hm.

As a band who's trying to get out there and get in front of people, how do you feel that San Antonio's responded to the reopening of this sort of entertainment?
- I think they were ready for it, excited for it.
We started working on stuff right before the pandemic hit.
We had our first show scheduled for May of 2020.
That got canceled for obvious reasons and we kind of just used that time to hone our skills and record our EP and release that and do some music videos and stuff and when we were ready, when things felt better, we started going out and I think it was received really well from our fellow San Antonio musicians.
And we've met a lot of really, really great musicians performing with different people, not just in San Antonio but Austin, San Marcos, all different places.
And I think everyone's just ready to create and express themselves again and be out like this.
- Do you think that time that you used to explore live streams and music videos, as a band who had not yet had the opportunity to play its first live show helped you guys kind of hone the stage presence or who you would be when you were finally able to present that?
- I think so.
I mean, I've been making music since I was 12 years old with my brother, we had a band called Communal Death Duck.
And since then, I've always been making music.
Andrew and I had some duo projects together and then we kind of, we didn't rope you in, I think Alex had been saying, "Hey, I play guitar "if y'all need a guitar player, I play guitar."
And so we thought we would bring him in and kind of test the waters and my thing was kind of like, well, we always hang out with Alex and Kaitlin, we're all best friends, let's give Kaitlin a bass.
So Kaitlin actually had never played bass before 2019.
We handed her a bass and she just killed it immediately.
- Thank you.
(Jillian laughs) - Yeah, we said, "Hold this."
- Play this thing.
You were in band once.
- Yes.
- So I guess more for you guys, how did it feel practicing during the pandemic?
- Oh, I think we really honed our sound in.
I think when we first started, it was kind of up in the air what we wanted and now we're kind of settling on this '60s, '70s type sound.
- Alien.
- Alien, yeah.
- Alien garage.
- Angular rock or whatever that you'd say.
- Yeah.
(band members laughing) - So had you never touched, I heard you say that you were in band.
Had you ever touched a stringed instrument like that or was it completely foreign?
- It was pretty foreign.
I mean, I kind of played around on people's guitars in middle school and high school but I played clarinet in band.
I haven't touched it since I graduated high school.
But I've been hanging out with these guys for what seems like forever, so I'm always around music but actually playing it was a bit of a challenge at first.
It was a little nerve-wracking.
- They're actually all high school friends, too, these guys.
- Oh, yeah, and Kaitlin and I are together and Jill and Cobb are together.
- Oh, so it's like a power couple couple.
- Yes.
- I think so, yeah.
And we all just happen to be best friends.
I think we just, we work really well together, we understand each other and I think we just feed off of each other's sort of fun, dumb energies.
(Kaitlin laughs) - Well, we accidentally arranged you guys in perfect eye contact.
(all laughing) I guess-- - Perfect.
- However things are going at home-- (Jillian laughs) You know, either welcome or I'm sorry.
(Jillian laughs) - [Andrew] You want to check that sound again or are we gonna just jump in?
- I think we can just jump in if you feel okay jumping in.
- I feel like I could jump into this.

(laughs) - So how has being a couple of couples affected the band dynamic?
Do you feel like you have to pull punches?
Like what is the-- - I feel like it's easier because we're always together.
Like even just as the two couples, like we're always hanging out, we were always hanging out before we started making music so it just feels right and it's easy.
- Yeah.
- And I think we all kind of have the same... - Goal?
- Yeah, the same goals in mind, we know what we want, and we're all kind of aligned together versus other bands where someone might just up and move away or we got married and we had a kid and I can't play shows with you anymore or whatever the case might be.
We're just all kind of on the same page as to what we want to accomplish, I think.
- Yeah, and it helps that them two are best friends and we're best friends, so it's like when I get in the car with her and go home after we have practice, it's like she'll stick up for Jill or something-- - Oh.
- If I'm like, "Oh, I don't know if I agreed with that one sound."
- That's funny.
- She'll be like, "No, I think Jill's right on that one "and it's a good little melody," or, you know, something like that and then I'll stick up for Cobb too.
(Jillian laughs) - Oh, thanks.
- So, essentially, it's not couples sticking up for each other, it's best friends sticking up for each other.
- We're the voice of reason for you guys.
- [Andrew] He didn't mean to come off like that, I promise.
- No, we all really love each other.
- No, we do.
- We even play video games together.
- It's true.
- Did those conversations have to happen a lot?
- Oh, actually, no, not really.
We all like the same type of music so it's kind of like we end up in the same spot.
It'll just be little things.
- Yeah.
- It's super boring, honestly.
- Yeah.
(all chuckling) - A lot of the times, it's us kind of just noodling for a long time and realizing, aw, this doesn't feel right, this is not good, let's go eat.
That's essentially it.
- Let's go get some noodles.
- Yeah, let's go get some food and watch TV and we'll feel better and then we'll make music again tomorrow, essentially what it is.
